History

Incubated 2003 by a Haitian university called Ecole Supérieure d’Infotronique d’Haïti (ESIH) in collaboration with ISTIA, France (Institut des Sciences et Techniques de l’Ingénieur d’Angers)  and AUF (Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie).

Mission

Create, in Haiti, a new leadership in the markets of high added value technologies.

Objectives

Create, in the Caribbean Region in general and in Haiti in particular,  a new and unique Hi-Tech know-how in the technologies of Virtual Reality..

- Use the technologies of Virtual Reality to develop solutions that will address not only local and regional, but also world issues (i.e. discriminations)

The Virtual Reality laboratory

The laboratory LPI-Haiti results from a triangular partnership between the « Ecole Supérieure d’Infotronique d’Haïti » (ESIH, Port Au Prince, Haiti), the company Worldviz (Santa Barbara, California, USA), the « Institut des Sciences et Techniques de l’Ingénieur d’Angers » (ISTIA, Angers, France) and the « Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie »(AUF) as well as an investment of about 150,000.00 US dollars.

This lab, operational since February 2007 is the only lab in the Caribbean entirely dedicated to the development of Virtual Reality (VR) applications.

Inside this lab, a team including six specialists is dedicated full-time to the development of VR applications. Five of those specialists are ESIH’s alumni and their academic background is as follows:
Five of them have a Master in Technological Innovation, Numeric Modelisation and Virtual Reality from the ISTIA (four of them have been financed by a one-year ESIH’s scholarships, and one of them by  a one-year AUF’s scholarship) ;
One of them is at this time preparing his PhD through an AUF’s three-year scholarship.

The hardware and software available in the lab include :
- A positionnal tracking space (optical system composed of four cameras and several markers)
- A stereoscopic projection space (active stereoscopy)
- Several human-machine interfaces such as:

  • A dataglove
  • A haptic interface
  • Gamepads and force feedback Joysticks
  • A Head Mounted Display

The Team

Virtua’s success depends on the quality of its people. A solid team of developers and modelers, all at the Master Level (specialized in Virtual Reality from the « Institut des Sciences et Techniques de l’Ingénieur d’Angers » or ISTIA, France), is responsible for giving life to the projects.
